Directions For Application of Atlas Mineral Surface Roll Roofing

Note: Read and follow instructions carefully to ensure satisfactory results.

General Instructions

This roofing is water resistant and well adapted for relatively steep roofing applications. CARELESS OR FAULTY APPLICATION MAY RESULT IN A LEAKY ROOF.  As long as lateral laps and end joints are carefully cemented, satisfactory results should be obtained on roofs having gradual inclines if proper provision is made to rapidly drain water from the roof.

Note: Do Not Apply On Roofs With Less Than 2" Per Foot of Slope Or Directly Over Old Roof Surfaces.

Roof Surface

Substrate should consist of dry, well-seasoned lumber of uniform thickness not more than 6" wide, or a properly installed and conditioned roof deck constructed of exterior type plywood, minimum thickness of 3/8". Alternatively 7/16" thickness APA rated non-veneer structured panel may be used. Pieces of tin or other suitable metal should be nailed over all knot holes and large cracks. If sheet metal is not available, pieces of this roofing may be used. The roof deck should be swept clean of all dirt and loose materials.

Roof Deck Ventilation

Adequate ventilation under the roof deck must be provided to prevent harmful condensation in winter and heat build-up in summer. Atlas Roll Roofing may be applied directly to Atlas Vented-R Nail Base insulation. Do not apply insulation to the underside of deck.

Underlayment

Atlas 15 Standard asphalt saturated felt or 15 Specification felt must be used for underlayment.

Cold Weather

If work is to be done in cold weather, rolls of roofing should be placed in a warm place for 24 hours prior to application.

Unrolling Roofing

Always unroll this roofing on a flat, smooth surface. Take special care in cold weather not to crack or damage the roofing by rough handling.

Prevention Of Wrinkling Or Buckling

Cut the roll into two 18´ lengths or three 12´ lengths and place in a warm area (>50 degrees F) for 24 hours prior to application. Then loosely re-roll the sheets the reverse way. The roofing should be drawn up tightly during application. Wrinkles should be pulled out during final fastening.

Lap Cement

An asphalt based roofing cement that complies with ASTM specification D 4586 Type II must be used. Application with a serrated trowel is recommended and cement used only in an amount necessary to obtain adhesion. In no case is cement usage to exceed two gallons per 100 square feet of cemented area. If adhesive thickens in cool weather, place cans in warm water. DO NOT HEAT OVER FLAMES.

NOTE: EXCESSIVE USE OF CEMENT WILL CAUSE BLISTERING OF THIS PRODUCT. DO NOT CEMENT ROLL ROOFING DIRECTLY TO THE ROOF DECK SURFACE. CEMENT ONLY THE LAPS. CEMENT USAGE: 3.5 ROLLS PER GALLON IF N.S. OR 4". 1 ROLL PER GALLON IF 19". USE AN UNDERLAYMENT LAYER.

Plan in Advance

Measure distance from ridge to eave and gable to gable to determine length and number of sheets required and where laps will occur. Avoid placing laps directly over joints in roof deck; increase width of lap if laps occur over any of these joints. To apply sheets in true alignment a chalk line should be used for lining up a uniform lap.

Directions For Application

Valleys

Apply valley sheets first. Cut a length of roofing into two strips, one 18 inches wide for lower layer and one 36 inches wide for upper layer. Fold these strips to conform to the angle of the valley or gutter. To apply lower layer, place face down. Start at bottom and nail every 6" along edges. Ends should be butted, not lapped. Coat this layer with lap cement and apply the upper sheet over the lower sheets, face up. Ends of upper sheet should be lapped 6" and cemented, but not nailed. Nail second sheet along outer edges every 6" The sheets used to cover the main roof should overlap valley sheets to within 1" of the valley angle, align with the rake line of the valley, and be cemented and nailed as for long side laps.

Dormers

Roof any dormers completely before starting the main roof.

Main Roof

Fig. 1 and 2 show two methods of applying roll roofing. Lap side laps 2", cement with asphalt-based roofing cement and nail 3" in a line 3/4" back from the edge of the sheet. Lap end laps 6" and secure with cement and two rows of nails, the first row 3/4" and the second row 1-3/4" from the edge. Space nails 3" apart and stagger the two rows. On horizontal application, nail from center of sheet towards ends; in vertical application, nail down from top of sheet. Coat nail heads with cement. Finish edges of roof by continuing roofing sheets 1/4" beyond the ends of the roof deck to form a drip edge and nail carefully. Be sure all laps are thoroughly cemented at all points. Carefully roll down edges of all laps.

Preferred Method

WARNINGS:

1.) EXCESSIVE USE OF CEMENT WILL CAUSE BLISTERING OF THIS PRODUCT. ATLAS ROOFING CORPORATION WILL ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE BLISTERING

2.) THIS PRODUCT IS NOT TO BE USED ON SLOPES LESS THAN 2" PER FOOT.

CAUTION! SLIPPERY WHEN WET

Do not walk on surfaces unless it is completely dry. Follow proper safety practices, including using appropriate shoes and safety rope.

CAUTION! KEEP ROLLS DRY AND COMPLETELY PROTECTED FROM THE WEATHER.
